Honda CRV - Matthew’s Day Off
Super Bowl assignments come maybe once a year. Or maybe once a lifetime.
“Live life to its fullest in the redesigned Honda CR-V” — was the strategy that drove the launch of the best-selling SUV. So who better to bring this to life than a character famous of living his life this way - Ferris Bueller. Except this time, it’s Matthew Broderick himself playing hooky from work and taking a much needed day off. It’s been viewed over 25 million times on YouTube. It’s ranked #18 on the list of most-watched ads ever on YouTube. It was considered by critics to be one of the top Super Bowl commercials of 2012. And some have included it on the best top 10 lists of all time.
It began with an unbranded teaser a few weeks prior to the Big Game, which got five million views on YouTube and over 300 articles written about it in three days time. People went bananas - thinking it was a potential long awaited sequel. Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show at the time, said it “nearly broke the Internet.”
We then released an extended version right before the Big Game - an homage to the beloved classic.
We hid over 30 “Easter Eggs” from the movie - ranging from obvious to extreme super fan level.
It became a digital treasure hunt to try and spot all that were hidden throughout.
